Southern economy was not prepared for the war. The naval blockade the north provided prevented the south from importing supplies for war. Because of this blockade, Confederate troops and families suffered from a lack of food. All the South had was cotton. Without any importing or exporting capabilities, the South was doomed. Ultimately, the north attacked southern economy even more by burning down many cotton fields.
