Confederate leaders were punished by short terms in prison then some were released with no cost. Davis was imprisoned at Fortress Monroe in Virginia. After two years at the prison, he was released on a bail for $100,000. Davis then spent the remainder of his life traveling the world and attending organizations for welfare services and economic services. His popularity was restored after he wrote A Short History of the Confederate States of America. Two months after he wrote the book, he died at a fellow politician's home happily at the age of 81 for unknown reasons. After the war, he was simply acquitted of all charges and lived an adventurous life.
