Davis wanted to be the aggressor even though all he had to do was defend because the South only needed to tie to keep away from the Union. Troops valiantly fell to the Union on Union soil at the battles of Gettysburg and Antietam. Despite his remarkable efforts, it just was not enough to push through the war. If he just defended instead of attacking, the outcome of the war would have favored the Confederates.
