The South was devastated in all ways after the civil war. Everything they had before the war was pretty much reduced to nothing. Economically they had nothing because everything they had was put into the war effort which they lost, politically the office holders of the Old Confederacy was disliked by everyone around, and socially southern people disliked the newly free blacks but they also went home to nothing.
